“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” – Barack Obama

Well, there is no doubt that November 2016 will go down in the history books as a time to remember – the billionaire property tycoon Donald Trump has taken on one of the most influential roles in the world… His journey to assume this role has been plagued with controversy… and irrespective of whether you personally support or are against the decision the majority of the American people have made, we certainly can expect to see a new and perhaps somewhat unpredictable chapter in US politics and global affairs.

I know many people are pretty worried and concerned about what this means and what will come… I have been one of them… I also know too it is important not to take everything we see in mainstream media as absolute fact. But it is hard to ignore and justify many of his comments on major issues as concerning! Please take note too that if you’re views do differ from what I share here, if you’re in favour of Donald Trump I have no intention of causing tension or conflict, if anything this is the major journey that many people, particularly across the US must face is not to dehumanise others because of their views or how they voted… (how would that be much different from the actions of ISIS that we all condemn?)

We can’t dispute the fact that Donald Trump’s stance on key issues has come across as pretty extreme, and in some cases shockingly unacceptable… Whether that is his derogatory comments towards Mexicans, or the leaked tapes with his vulgar words about women, or his plans to build The Wall, or his apparent lack of understanding of international affairs…. Or quite worryingly his views that climate change isn’t as much of an issue as much of the world makes it out to be!

There have been widespread protests over this last weeks across America as many young people in particular refuse to accept him as their president.

But… what is the one good thing during this period of massive instability with a madman at the helm of one of the most powerful and influential countries in the world?

Well… quite surprisingly the greatest thing about it is that it has stirred up a lot of people to want to stand up for change! That is honestly the greatest thing… See even a recent Harvard professor who once advised presidents and appeared in Leonardo DiCaprio’s climate change documentary Before the Flood expressed that the power is in the people… that it is the people that dictate the direction of the nation, the president is more a puppet seeking popularity votes responding to the cries of the masses.

So what am I getting at here? It all boils down to our motivations… See we as human beings are typically more motivated by what we don’t want, than what we actually do want. We’re typically more motivated by fear of losing something than what we’ll gain. This means that when things are OK, when things are comfortable, even if not great, people sit still, people aren’t motivated to get up out of their seats and have their voices heard. There is little motivation for change. It’s a bit like the frog in boiling water story. If you put a frog in boiling water it will jump straight out. But put a frog in cool water and slowly turn up the heat it doesn’t recognise the gradual change and will remain there until he boils… poor frog (don’t worry no frogs were harmed in the writing of this article)!! So this experience of Donald Trump being elected is just that… the waters of social change are boiling over evoking enough desire in people to express their voices and want change!!

The great thing then about Donald Trump becoming President is it has awaken more people who want to see positive change! Now… my greatest fear then isn’t that Donald Trump is President and what he might do. Quite the opposite. My greatest fear is that like so many things, again we get comfortable with what is and the motivation dwindles!! That’s what I’m scared about is that all those millions of people who aren’t in favour of Donald Trump gradually lose their motivation! It will happen. Trust me it will happen because that is the nature of the human ego. But I want to do everything I can to find, unite and empower as many of those people as possible who want to see great change. That’s exactly why Be The Change Project was born! The more we can help and empower those who want to see change indeed evoke that change… no matter how small, not just shout about change, but actually evoke change in their own lives, their families, their local communities, their work places… that’s how every single movement or revolution in history started! We need a revolution of compassion, a revolution of more sound decisions in our everyday lives to be made about how we indeed live our lives more in harmony with others and with the environment!

This great video below from the popular artist and social media personality Prince Ea sums it up perfectly!!!

If you’d like to learn more about that, about being that change, about how you can be a greater force for good then obviously do feel free to reach out to be personally, I’d love to hear from you (adam.wallis@bethechangeproject.org).
